Charles Lu

Grade 12 student and an inquisitive young maker with a passion for sustainable innovation, soon heading to UBC to further his studies in engineering and technology.

About

Charles Lu is a Grade 12 student from Prince of Wales Secondary School, with a strong passion for environmental sustainability and innovative design. From a young age, he has been deeply inspired by the idea of helping the planet and finding practical solutions to environmental challenges. For his capstone project, Charles designed and built a smart and stackable greenhouse. It is a vertical farming prototype that focuses on conserving space, water, and energy. Although he began with no prior experience in coding, electronics, or 3D design, he committed himself to learning each skill with the guidance of his mentors. With the support and guidance of EIM Technology, Charles was able to bring his vision to life. His project showcases not only technical growth but also his dedication to developing technologies that support both people and the environment.

Project Development

Period: Dec 2024 - Apr 2025 [Student]

EcoStack is an innovative vertical greenhouse system created by Charles Lu as his Grade 12 capstone project. Designed to reduce the environmental impact of traditional farming, EcoStack uses a compact and modular structure to grow plants efficiently in small urban spaces. The system features smart LED lighting controlled by light sensors, a simple yet effective water distribution mechanism inspired by household design, and a sustainable growing medium made from coconut husk. With mentorship and support from EIM Technology, Charles learned essential skills in 3D modeling, electronics, and coding to bring his vision to life and take his first step toward building a more sustainable future.
